Kris Cox

Kris Cox's paintings project a quiet and sensual power, highlighting the artist's skill and versatility. Drawing inspiration from the legacy of modernism, Cox's constructed paintings eschew the flamboyance of gestural expressionism while focusing on precision and aesthetic purity. Materiality is implicit in the works and harken back to the artist's first preoccupation as a ceramicist. Control and chance entwine as wood panels, canvases, paint, putty, asphalt emulsions, beeswax and other materials are built up and then scraped away until the desired surfaces are achieved.
